Why People Only Care About Your Marketing, Not You

Maverick Steffen  -  3/29/2024

Marketing isn't a business term; it's a powerful force that shapes how we see and value the world around us.

It's like the secret sauce that makes sure good ideas get noticed. Let's break down why it's so crucial, inspired by big thinkers like Steve Jobs and everyday stories that show marketing in action.

Steve Jobs once pointed out that humans aren't the fastest or strongest creatures, but we're incredibly good at making tools that help us go beyond our natural abilities.

Just like a bicycle makes us faster, marketing helps businesses and their products zoom ahead.

It's about making sure that people notice and appreciate the great things you're offering, whether it's a world-changing gadget or a delicious slice of pizza.

One cold January morning in 2007, Joshua Bell, one of the world's finest violinists, performed incognito in a Washington D.C. subway station.

Despite his fame and the beauty of his music, most commuters hurried past, oblivious.

Bell, who typically sold out grand concert halls at hefty ticket prices, only collected a few dollars from the few who paused to listen.

This experiment, orchestrated by The Washington Post, starkly demonstrates the power of context and presentation.

There are tons of businesses out there offering amazing things, but many don't get the attention or price they deserve.

No matter the quality of the performance, without the right marketing and setting, even the most exquisite art can go unnoticed and underappreciated.

Meanwhile, some businesses sell average stuff at high prices because they've got great marketing. Ever heard of KAY Jeweler?

That's the power of knowing how to present and sell your product or service. Good marketing helps bridge this gap, ensuring that quality and hard work get the recognition they deserve.

Think of marketing as a storyteller. It doesn't just sell you something; it connects you with a story or an experience that resonates with your life and dreams.

It's about creating a feeling or a memory that sticks with you, making you choose one brand over another. Marketing also sets the stage for these stories, making sure they reach the right audience at the right time.

In our fast-paced, competitive world, understanding and using marketing is more important than ever.

It's not just about business; it's about making sure good ideas and hard work get noticed and appreciated. And it's this effort that drives me constantly-- ensuring you are appreciated and compensated for every inch of competence you posses.

So next time you see a good man without a date, a lonely pup without a owner, a phenomenal book that barely anyone has read, a plagiarizing fraud as Harvard's President, an obese man with no job and a beautiful wife, or a crappy book on the Bestseller list, just remember, that isn't by accident, that's by the power of MARKETING.

P.S. When Joshua did another concert in the Subway, but this time the Washington Post let people know, the place was packed to the brim.
